October 10-11, 2024 - ECMO Collaborative Care and Mobilization Simulation Course (Adult)
This course will be held at the ExtraCorporeal Education Center (EC2) in Murfreesboro, TN, located just 30 miles south of Nashville, Tennessee.
PLEASE NOTE the ADDRESS for EC2 is 2610 Merchants Walk, Murfreesboro, TN 37128
This 2-day course is designed to provide the rehabilitation professional with comprehensive knowledge and practical clinical skills to safely manage the complex patient population supported on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The course will provide a didactic overview of foundational cardiac/pulmonary principles, common critical care support lines/devices, ECMO physiology(VA, VV, and hybrids ), and mobilization strategies specific to patients on ECMO. The learner will participate in high fidelity simulation experiences designed to reinforce didactic information and hands-on clinical skills.
Course participation is limited to a small number of learners to assure plenty of time for not only individual practice but also for maximal contact hours with the highly skilled and experienced ECMO and Physical Therapy Staff assisting with the training process.
This course is intended for Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists or other healthcare professionals who care for and assist with mobilization of patients requiring ECMO support.
Four ECMO E-learning modules will also be provided for completion prior to the course.
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Define the clinical implications associated with dysfunction of the pulmonary system
- Define clinical implications of dysfunction of the cardiac system
- Demonstrate understanding or implications of drugs during mobilization
- Identify the indices of tolerance by patient of mobilization
- Describe the basic history of the development of ECMO
- Define the differences between modalities VV and VA ECMO
- Examine futility and withdrawal issues as related to ECMO
- Define the members of the ECMO mobility team
- Discuss potential complications associated with mobilizing on ECMO
