This course will be held in Murfreesboro, TN, located just 30 miles south of the Nashville International Airport - BNA.

This course is intended for Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Perfusionists and other healthcare professionals who care for patients with severe respiratory or cardiac failure requiring ECMO support.

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

Discuss the indications and contraindications for ECMO support
Explain the different modes of ECMO support
Identify circuit components and discuss their purpose
Explain ECMO physiology
Assess and explain the adequacy of support for VV and for VA ECMO
Describe the process of ECMO weaning for VV and VA ECMO
Manage and troubleshoot the ECMO Circuit

In this course, we offer didactic and simulation training designed to reinforce the core knowledge and skillset needed to care for an ECMO patient.

Our course is formatted to provide the educational content suggested by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). ELSO has published suggested “Guidelines for Training and Continuing Education of ECMO Specialists”. These guidelines provide a framework governing structure, content, evaluation and on-going training requirements essentially outlining standards that can be used by organizations training clinicians to function as ECMO Specialists. Adherence to and building upon these concepts ensure that a solid knowledge base is established. When partnered with hands-on and/or simulation training the learner develops a strong skill set to provide quality care to the patient receiving extracorporeal life support.

The course content will cover both VA and VV modalities and the hands-on wet labs and simulations will be conducted in our new Extracorporeal Education Center (EC2). Integration of collaborative ECMO Advantage philosophies set the cornerstone for your learning experience leading to improved safety, better outcomes and decreased complications.

Current learning strategies allow for the conveyance of relevant didactic content which is then reinforced when incorporated into specific simulations. This format is designed to enhance the learning experience by immersing the learner into a realistic environment in which they must appropriately apply the knowledge they have acquired to resolve the issue at hand. It incorporates repetition, layering of information and progressive development of specific technical skills used when addressing routine and emergent situations.

The intent of this course is to promote patient safety by enriching knowledge, technical expertise, teamwork, and interpersonal communication required in today’s healthcare environment.
