This new format is designed to provide all of the same comprehensive content we offered in our traditional 5-Day course but changes the format to allow for more flexibility in time to digest the content. In addition, we have revised the in-person sessions to a scenario-based learning experience that will enhance comprehension and recollection of what was learned from the self-paced pre-course content. We also then allow time POST COURSE for learners to continue to have access to the eLearning modules for 30 days so that the learner can go back and review the content AFTER the in-person training.
To give a little more detail of the scenario-based training, over the course of Day-1, we will walk the learner through a series of decision points related to VV ECMO and then VA ECMO. We will do this by telling the story of two different patients that enter the hospital and experience disease progression. At each primary decision point, the ECMO Advantage trainers will guide the learners through pertinent decisions or actions based on the information provided in the scenario. The learners will pull from what they learned in the pre-course content as well as information reinforced and presented by the trainers at each decision point in the scenario. "NORMAL" VV and VA ECMO scenarios (1 each) will be presented. Then we will reset the scenarios back to specific points to go down slightly different paths to discuss variants, complications, etc for both VV and VA. This 1 day of scenario training will also include some time for hand-on skills so that the learners are prepared to participate in simulations.
Then, the next 2 Days of simulation help the learners apply what they have learned through high fidelity simulation. Simulation allows the ECMO Specialists to gain some hands-on skills as well as critical thinking.
In this course, we offer blended learning experiences designed to reinforce the core knowledge and skillset needed to care for an ECMO patient.
Our course is formatted to provide the educational content suggested by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). ELSO has published suggested “Guidelines for Training and Continuing Education of ECMO Specialists”. These guidelines provide a framework governing structure, content, evaluation and on-going training requirements essentially outlining standards that can be used by organizations training clinicians to function as ECMO Specialists. Adherence to and building upon these concepts ensure that a solid knowledge base is established. When partnered with hands-on and/or simulation training the learner develops a strong skill set to provide quality care to the patient receiving extracorporeal life support.
The course content will cover both VA and VV modalities and the hands-on wet labs and simulations will be conducted in our state-of-the-art Extracorporeal Education Center (EC2) located at 2610 Merchants Walk, Murfreesboro, TN 37128. Integration of collaborative ECMO Advantage philosophies set the cornerstone for your learning experience leading to improved safety, better outcomes and decreased complications.
The intent of this course is to promote patient safety by enriching knowledge, technical expertise, teamwork, and interpersonal communication required in today’s healthcare environment.
